5 tips for killer content on social media

I’ve been curating my social media content for ten years. Ten years of studying business and marketing, websites and branding, and focus and light.⁣ ten years of learning from my mistakes. Ten years of youtube tutorials, of consistently showing up, and perfecting my craft.

I’m often askeD:

“how did you build a following?”⁣

“how did you become so successful so quickly?”

The truth is, IT took me ten years to become a “quick” success. ⁣over the years, I’ve learned what has worked well in terms of social media content, and what hasn’t. ultimately, the content you post online shapes your brand. I’m talking the types of photos you post, the captions you write and the quality of your content as a whole.

here are my top tips on creating killer content on your social platforms.

1. Know what your content pillars are.

I always say to choose no more than five pillars. why? because you don’t want to confuse your audience. ask yourself: What are you MOST passionate about? And does that coincide with something that you love? Mine are monat, photography, family, fashion, and women in business. Other things I’m passionate about? Systemic racism. Advocating for certain causes. Stupid tiktoks. Cooking for my family— I post about those things not as regularly because they aren’t what I’m MOST passionate about, so I utilize stories for those. You have to find a good rhythm of personal and professional content for your social media. remember, You’re so much more than your business. You have many, many other things to offer. Share those things too. Let people really see YOU you’ll be amazed at how much better your content performs when you do this. .

2. Video content is king.

You HAVE to put your face out there when you’re building your brand. yup, on video. Regularly. Daily. if you’re not sure where to start, consider some of these ideas for fresh video content:

- personal Stories

- Tutorials on your feed (think beauty routine, hair routine).

- Interesting/ Educational tips related to your 5 pillars

also, remember that People want to see you. They don’t want to see constant screenshots from other people’s feeds, they want you, that’s why they follow you. Put your face on stories.

“Video isn't a new trend - it's been featured as a key social media marketing focus of note for a couple of years now. However, live video is something that still offers significant potential for marketers - and more brands are now picking up on the option.

Streaming enables you to react immediately to what’s going on, connect with your audience in a relatable way, and show them that there’s a real person behind the brand. It lets you communicate with your audience directly” (SOCIALMEDIATODAY)

3. Critique your feed as a consumer.

This is the secret. Want the consumer to trust and follow you? Want them to engage with you and your content? You have to come from a place of the consumer. Every single time I post to my feed, I ask myself “is this adding value to my following and putting the consumer first?” Now, you’re allowed a moment of self-love (selfies) or a mom moment or A pet moment (think back to your five pillars). But if you aren’t seeing the engagement and action you want, the question you ask yourself is “what does the consumer want?” Did I OFFER this in a way the consumer would gravitate towards? Consistently checking your instagram insights on your IG stories is a great way to determine whether or not someone found value in your post. Did it get shared a lot? Did people take action from that post?

4. Hire a photographer for content.

do this Quarterly. Monthly. Whatever you can afford. Yes, you can shoot a TON of video and photo yourself. You can have your spouse or kids help, even! But this is such a good investment for your business. I recommend two hours, three outfits, 2-3 hair styles and a list pre-made of photos you want to create a visual image for content you plan on putting out. if you want people to take your brand seriously online, this is a great way to step up the quality of content that you’re posting.

5. EXPAND YOUR BRAND.

Before Monat, I was a photographer. I was a business mentor. I have multiple online shops. I was also a blogger, an affiliate with several companies including rewardstyle/LTK brand. Monat was just an extension of my brand. It’s the most lucrative, the one that deserves most of my time—but my point is, I just kept diversifying my portfolio. It’s always smart to have more than one branch of your brand to protect yourself and give yourself some great options in the future.

Social media Week nailed it here:

“Deepening key audience relationships and elevating your brand voice above the noise is rewarding work, but marketers must always anticipate that this is a fluctuating responsibility demanding constant reevaluation of core strategies and tactics. A simple formula to achieve this? A relentless hustle + good judgment.”
